SARAH BALDWIN

I completed my BSc (Hons) in Microbiology at University College Cork (UCC, Ireland) in 2025.

My bachelor’s thesis focused on growth, biofilm formation and effects of quorum sensing molecules on Vibrio species. Following my graduation, I worked as a research assistant in the lab of Dr. Jerry Reen in UCC, studying the effects of artificial sweeteners on biofilm formation before focusing on further understanding the switch from acute to chronic biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

I joined the SHIELD Doctoral Network in April 2026 at the AO Research Institute, Davos (ARI, Switzerland) where I am working as part of the Infection Biology team, under the supervision of Dr. Fintan Moriarty. Although I am based primarily in Davos my PhD is in conjunction with University College Cork in Ireland, where I am co-supervised by Dr. Jerry Reen from the School of Microbiology.

The main aims of my SHIELD project are to evaluate chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation in in vitro models, including the use of materials used in the production of orthopaedic implants. Additionally, I will evaluate anti-microbial substances for antibacterial and biofilm-eradicating behavior and develop a Zebrafish model for infection.
