MARTINA GORLA

I achieved a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnologies in 2002 and completed a Master’s degree in Medical biotechnologies at the University of Piemonte Orientale Amedeo avogadro, Italy. After graduation, I worked as research fellow in a synthetic biology laboratory,  following a EU Founded project called Bioaction, complementing the work started during the Master’s internship. Thank to this opportunity, I gained hands on experience with  biofilm-forming pathogen bacteria and genetic engeenering.

I am the Doctoral Candidate 2 of SHIELD, and I joined the University of Gothenburg in March 2026.

My project is related to the underlying new advanced approaches to understanding biofilm-related infections in orthopaedic implants, exploring in vitro & in vivo models. DC2 specifically aims to develop standardised, dynamic biological models that incorporate host factors, mechanical stress, and microbial-host interactions. These advanced models will better replicate the complex environment of IAIs, aiming to understand their mechanisms and improve prevention and treatment strategies.
