Training Events and Programme

The SHIELD Doctoral Network offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary training programme designed to equip 16 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) with the scientific, technical, and transferable skills needed for successful careers in academia, industry, and healthcare.

 Network-Wide Training Events 

The training is delivered through a combination of local PhD programmes, training-through-research, network-wide training events, and outreach activities, ensuring a well-rounded and impactful learning experience.

Kick-off meeting  October 2-3 2025  

In Sweden, Month 2:
Launch of the network, coordination of recruitment, and introduction to training, dissemination, and management strategies.

Initial Orientation Workshop

In Sweden, Month 8 (April) : Focus on implant-associated infections, research methodology, ethics, gender and diversity, and scientific writing.  

SHIELD Summer School 

UK, Month 14:  Advanced training in biomaterials synthesis, antimicrobial technologies, and host-material interactions. Includes the mid-term review meeting.  

SHIELD Winter School

Switzerland, Month 20: Training on preclinical models for evaluating antimicrobial devices, including analytical techniques and leadership skills.  

Industrial Workshops 

1st Workshop Ireland, Month 26: From lab to market – antimicrobial medical devices and regulatory compliance.  

2nd Workshop France, Month 32: Commercialisation, entrepreneurship, and innovation in medical technologies.  

Open Science Workshop

Germany, Month 38: Focus on translational research and regenerative medicine, with career development sessions.  

SHIELD Final Conference

Spain, Month 44: Presentation of SHIELD achievements, future collaborations, and career planning
